Your Journey Starts Here.

No. Magnet programs are designed to serve students from across Los Angeles Unified, so your child does not need to live in the 74th Street neighborhood to apply. Families apply through the LAUSD Choices process, and placement is based on the Magnet selection process rather than neighborhood attendance boundaries.

No. For on-time applications, applying earlier in the application window does not give your child an advantage. On-time Magnet applicants are considered through LAUSD's Magnet selection process, which uses Magnet priority points, program openings, and other district selection requirements. The important thing is to submit the application by the on-time deadline.

Late applications are different: they are considered after the on-time process and are handled based on available space. For 2027–28, LAUSD's late application window opens December 1, 2026.

Eligibility means your child has met LAUSD's requirements to be considered for a Gifted Magnet program. Selection is the separate process LAUSD uses to determine whether your child is offered an available seat.

A student can therefore be eligible for a Gifted Magnet but not selected for placement. LAUSD's 2027–28 timeline reflects this distinction: Gifted Magnet eligibility notifications are scheduled for January 19, 2027, while selection/waitlist notifications are scheduled for February 8–12, 2027.

f your child submits an on-time Magnet application but is not selected for a Magnet placement, LAUSD places the student on the waiting list for the first-choice Magnet program. If a seat later becomes available, the school may contact families from the waiting list.

Being waitlisted does not guarantee that a seat will become available.

Transportation may be available for eligible students who live within LAUSD boundaries, but it is not guaranteed for every student or address. Transportation eligibility depends on LAUSD's transportation criteria and the student's residence in relation to the Magnet program.

Families who need help with the application process are welcome to contact the 74th Street Gifted Magnet Coordinator. We can help you understand our program, the application process, Gifted Magnet eligibility requirements, and where to find LAUSD Choices resources.

For questions about an official application, eligibility determination, selection status, or other district-level decisions, families should also consult LAUSD Choices.
